Simon Fraser School of Contemporary Arts
Deadline: January 15, 2024
Why
I’m interested in Simon Fraser because it’s in Vancouver. I love Toronto but I also desire a change of scenery. Their program is interdisciplinary with a focus on music, dance, theatre, film, video and visual art. I like these mix of fields and the potential of my practice expanding to some of them particularly video, performance and music.
Studio Research
I want to work with Jin-me Yoon. SFU requires three scenarios of artistic project. Here are ideas I have so far.
- Work about my personal re-connection to land and nature in a different place than the one I grew up in. Growing up in the Philippines, I’ve always felt connected to nature and I felt like I lost that here in Canada. I want to rediscover it, and I think that being on the west coast and being able to experience the sea and mountains again would be inspiring.
- A mapping project that involves mapping on a national scale but is personal. Potential media explorations in urban and landscape interventions, photography, self-portraiture, film, installation. I could be about the search for personal identity and belonging in a geographically vast nation.
- Research and produce a body of work about the earliest waves of Filipino migration to Canada in Vancouver (1800s to 1900s and onwards).
