Entwines
polymer clay, threads (2023)
Entwines is a work produced out of my residency in Oaxaca, Mexico. Inspired by the region’s ‘alebrijes’, which are folk art sculptures of fantastical or spirit animals, I created a form that imagines how my spirit creature would look – low in the ground, calcified but still capable of sprawling. Inspired by textiles of Oaxaca, I use threads to represent the new connections and friendships I made during the residency.
This creature represents my personal and health struggles for the past few years and the re-discovery and re-growth that I’ve been through since focusing on art.
