Foreign Leaves
acrylic on paper (2022)Foreign Leaves is about me questioning the authenticity of my childhood memories. I cut vibrantly painted pieces of paper and cut them into shapes of mango, guava, santol, jute and bamboo – plants that I used to see growing up in the Philippines. In making these shapes, I ponder if I can still remember their true color, scent, texture and scale.
Installed in autumn, a season that I didn't experience as a child, I want to show the contrast between real deciduous leaves and the fake tropical leaves, to ask myself which of them is more foreign.
