Retracing Childhood
In this project, I revisit some of my childhood memories by going through a virtual journey. I use Street View to visit places that remind me of my childhood. With this process, I simulate the experience of homecoming – an experience that has eluded me since moving to Canada twelve years ago.
Through painting these places, I re-create and re-imagine my past. Using a combination of watercolour, and translucent non-absorbent surfaces, I convey the ethereal, fleeting, and slippery quality of my memories.
Looking back at my past and original homeland, I re-discover my roots, and understand my place in the Filipino diaspora. By writing about my time of innocence, I aim to make sense of who I was, who I am now, and who I want to be.
