Artifacts

Using multiple definitions of the word artifact, artifact as an object and artifact as an image anomaly, I create an artwork that stands as a metaphor for the experience of living through a pandemic. I create an image of the mask suspended in time to capture it as an artifact of this time period using a crude and hand-made printmaking process of making unintended marks and visual artifacts. With its double meaning, I tell the story of how the virus has disrupted our history and show how this simple human invention stood in its way. With this artwork I reflect on what the long-term effects of COVID-19 would be on our society, and ponder if the artifacts of this pandemic will remain and shape the way we live in the future.
